POSITION SUMMARY

Residence Directors work as part of the Residence Life Team in service to students. Residence Life works to foster a residential environment that fulfills the goals and vision of the Office of Residence Life Mission Statement: To create safe and inclusive learning communities that support, challenge, and inspire all students to be ethical leaders and citizens in a diverse society. Additionally, to support Residence Life Pillars: Connections, Diversity & Social Justice, Learning, Leadership Development and Professional Development. Residence Directors are full-time Master’s level 12-month live-in staff members who provide a holistic approach to working with students and guests in a variety of areas in their lives including personal and academic concerns. Each Residence Director, possibly in collaboration with a graduate-level Assistant Residence Director, will coordinate and administer all aspects of a residence life program in one residence hall/residential complex, possibly including the development and support of a Residential Learning Community.

 

Responsibilities associated with this student-centered position may include the following: creating connections and implementing a student development program within a residence hall/residential complex of approximately 400-900 students; selecting, training, supervising and evaluating graduate and undergraduate student staff; coordinating a Residential Learning Community (RLC) with staff, students, and faculty; mentoring students related to academic success; developing and nurturing student leaders; advising student organizations; developing and implementing programs; adjudicating student conduct hearings; providing individual assistance to students; coordinating summer housing operations; and other duties as assigned.

 

The selected candidate will be well-organized and able to work well under pressure with multiple and consistently changing priorities. To be successful in this position, the Residence Director must have excellent interpersonal and written communication, organization, administrative skills, and supervision experience. An expressed and demonstrated commitment to diversity & social justice and student development is critical for this position.

 

As an administrative official of the University, the Residence Director will be under the supervision of a Residence Life Central Staff Member. This position includes working with diverse groups of students, staff, guests, and customers such as non-traditionally aged; gender diverse; religiously diverse; international; persons with disabilities; gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgender; persons of color; and socio-economic status.

 

REQUIREMENTS

Required:

  • Master’s degree in Student Personnel, Higher Education, Counseling or a related field by start date
  • Demonstrated commitment to student and community development
  • Previous supervision experience (minimum of 9 months)
  • Previous Residence Life live-in experience

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity & social justice
  • Demonstrated commitment to academic success (i.e., working with residential learning communities, faculty members, academically focused programs/initiatives, etc)
  • Student conduct experience
  • Crisis management experience

 

As a live-in position, there may be some weekend and evening responsibilities.

 

SALARY AND BENEFITS

Salary range: $40,000 - $48,000. Meal plan and furnished two-bedroom apartment provided. Partial meal plan provided to partners/spouses and children (depending on age).  Spouse, family, and/or adult guest are able to live in the apartment. Pet friendly policy.  CSU offers domestic partner benefits.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Student/Community Development

  • Working within a Residential Curriculum framework, initiate, plan, support, and evaluate programming activities (with assistance from staff, students, and hall council) consistent with the goals and mission of the Office of Residence Life and Department of Housing and Dining Services
  • Work with the Assistant Directors in planning and implementing a community development plan that meets the needs of a diverse student population
  • Assess students’ residential experience on a monthly basis, both qualitative and quantitative information, utilizing the Student Voice/Campus Labs online assessment, focus groups, and other methods
  • Advise Hall Council to include providing leadership development to officers, mentoring related to planning and setting a vision, assisting with budget management, and supporting efforts of organization
  • Recruit students to participate in university-wide involvement and leadership opportunities
  • Serve as an advocate for RHA and support NRHH through nominating students and staff for “Of the Month” Awards; co-advise RHA and NRHH as needed
  • Serve as liaison with summer guests and students

 

Staff Selection, Supervision, and Development

  • Select, train, supervise, mentor, and evaluate graduate and undergraduate staff
  • Develop and implement an ongoing staff development plan
  • Recruit outstanding student leaders to apply for Resident Assistant, Inclusive Community Assistant, Community Desk Manager, and other paraprofessional positions, including summer conference student staff positions
  • Participate in staff selection processes
  • Co-facilitate a section of Residence Life ExCELS: Exploring Community Engagement & Leadership Skills, the student staff selection class
  • Serve as a positive role model for staff and students, including projecting a positive attitude toward the position, department, and institution

 

Academic Initiatives and Residential Learning Communities (RLCs)

  • May support and implement a Residential Learning Community (RLC) in residence hall, in conjunction with academic sponsor (includes connecting with faculty, planning programs, supporting undergraduate staff, assessing outcomes, attending events, and recruiting students to participate in the RLC)
  • Mentor and coach student staff to successfully support and participate in academic success programs, retention efforts, and academic initiatives
  • Facilitate CSU Meet and Greet, an annual event bringing faculty and staff into the residence halls
  • Facilitate GPA goal setting conversations with Resident Assistant staff, floor communities, and individual students
  • Coordinate presentation of study skills workshops in fall and spring semesters
  • Coordinate recognition for individual students and floor communities who have earned high GPAs

 

Student Conduct

  • Adjudicate university student conduct hearings, utilizing an educational approach and restorative justice model
  • Maintain consistency through effective follow through with educational sanctions
  • Maintain accurate records in judicial database, Maxient
  • Support the Student Resolution Center (SRC) by referring cases, participating in training, and advising as needed

 

 

 

Diversity and Social Justice

  • Serve as active liaison with Student Diversity Programs and Services (SDPS) offices by supporting and assisting with programmatic efforts
  • May work with and support international students, in conjunction with the Office of International Programs
  • Demonstrate personal and professional commitment to diversity and social justice by involvement in teaching, research/creative activity, and service to the profession and/or cultural activities
  • Demonstrate a commitment to growing and challenging oneself in all areas of diversity

 

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Participate in regular Residence Life Team meetings
  • Facilitate Management Team meetings for hall including the following key staff members: Community Desk Manager, Environmental Technician Supervisor, Maintenance Lead, Dining Hall Manager, and Residential Learning Community Sponsor
  • Address student and parent/family issues in order to resolve them in a satisfactory manner; communicate all information to direct supervisor and others on an as-needed basis
  • Oversee, in coordination with the Community Desk Manager, the opening and closing of the residence hall
  • Maintain office hours for visibility and problem solving for students and guests
  • Serve as a campus and community resource for conference sponsors
  • Summer duties, which may include working with summer conferences, Ram Orientation, or summer school
  • Participate in collateral assignments with various offices throughout campus
  • Participate in pre-conference meetings for assigned summer conferences, and supervise check-in and check-out processes
  • Facilitate various departmental safety initiatives within the hall
  • Fulfill other duties assigned by the Office of Residence Life or Department of Housing & Dining Services

 

Crisis Management

  • Participate in the on-call duty rotation; assist with campus crisis management and response to critical incidents
  • Provide campus-wide on-call service during breaks and summer (serving conference guests and summer school students)
  • Counsel, consult, and advise students on an individual and group basis as necessary, and refer when appropriate to the proper resources/agencies on campus

 

Professional Development

  • Participate in University, Divisional, and Departmental development activities
  • Attend regional or national workshops/conferences for continued development and training
  • Stay current in higher education, employee learning, diversity and social justice, etc. (through readings, trainings, workshops, conferences, etc.)
  • Develop connections with staff in various University offices, including Student Diversity Programs and Services, CSU Police Department, CSU Health Network, Training and Organizational Development, etc.
  • Provide information on current issues (locally/regionally/nationally) in Higher Education; specifically related to involvement, professional development, and training opportunities
