Ram Orientation Resident Assistant (RA)


The Ram Orientation Resident Assistant (RA) is a live-in student staff member in the Office of Residence Life, Housing & Dining Services. .  The RA assists in supporting the Residence Life Mission: “To create safe and inclusive learning communities that support, challenge, and inspire all students to be ethical leaders and citizens in a diverse society”.  RAs also support Colorado State University’s Principles of Community: Inclusion, Integrity, Respect, Service, and Social Justice.  Finally, RAs support Residence Life’s Pillars: Connections, Leadership Development, Diversity and Social Justice, Learning, and Professional Development. Ram Orientation RAs are expected to provide excellent customer service to incoming students and guests, and assist incoming students with: transition, multicultural competence, learning, and ethical decision making.



Under the general supervision of the Ram Orientation Assistant Residence Director (ARD), the RA will have responsibility in customer service, safety & security within the residence hall, and serving as a resource to the incoming students and their guests. This position is designed to enrich and support Colorado State University through various activities relating to our Ram Orientation Housing program.  RAs will provide information and programs, be a resource for students and guests, ensure building safety, and present the positive spirit of Colorado State University.


Position Responsibilities


  1. Establish and maintain an environment that is supportive of successful academic achievement.
  2. Help students utilize academic and career resources on campus.
  3. Assist students in connecting with other students around common courses and academic/career interests.

Student Contact

  1. Initiate interactions and conversations with residents individually.                           
  2. Maintain a high profile in the hall; be approachable and receptive.
  3. Encourage interaction among students and acknowledge the diversity within the community.
  4. Encourage students to utilize campus resources and work in partnership with other departments on campus.


Community Development

  1. Provide information to individuals and groups.
  2. Encourage the development of an environment that is inclusive of the diverse backgrounds of residents.
  3. Mediate conflicts between residents.
  4. Work consistently to create a civil and respectful atmosphere in the building.
  5. Facilitate late night programming that connect students with each other to support the Ram Orientation experience.
  6. Provide information to students and guests through bulletin boards, postings, and informal contact.
  7. Provide information about and encourage students to utilize campus resources.
  8. Maintain a high profile in the hall when working; be approachable and receptive.
  9. Encourage interaction among diverse students on the floor and in the hall.
  10. Work cooperatively with students to understand Housing & Dining Services’ commitment to diversity, and CSUs Principles of Community both by respecting the rights and privacy of others and being supportive of individual differences.


Community Desk and Customer Service Operations

  1. Serve as a resource of information for students, guests, staff or others via phone & one-on-one interaction and while working the front desk, check-in, check-out, and luggage check.
  2. Strong customer service skills are a necessity due to the amount of interaction with students and guests.
  3. Maintain informational boards and posting information.
  4. Handle certain aspects of residence hall keys including completing key inventories, checking out of temporary keys or other keys to specific rooms in the building.
  5. Log and process all Lost and Found items in a timely manner and attempt to contact the owner if one has been identified.
  6. Answer phone calls, take messages and transfer calls as needed. 
  7. Work various shifts so the Front Desk can remain open 24 hours/day while Ram Orientation is in session.


Safety and Security

  1. During emergencies, record and relay information to the appropriate staff members and agencies.  This includes, but is not limited to, fire alarms, rescue calls, severe weather notices, and police calls.
  2. Carry a departmental cell phone and share in the responsibility for safety and security of residents through building safety walks while on call (approximately 2-3 times per week). On-call hours are typically between 7:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. or when the front desk is closed.
  3. Serve as a resource of information for students, guests, staff or others via phone, one-on-one interaction, and during security walks.
  4. Assume responsibility for informing and educating students about their rights and responsibilities as students and hall residents.  Communicate residence hall policies and procedures, expectations concerning standards of student conduct at Colorado State University, as well as the possible consequences resulting from a violation of stated policies and procedures.


Staff Functions

  1. Attend the Ram Orientation Staff Meet and Greet April 5th, 2017.
  2. Must attend all required weekly staff meetings.
  3. Must work mandatory workdays.
  4. Assist with hall and administrative duties.
  5. Know, respond to, and follow up on floor/hall emergencies/procedures, serving as a front line responder as a part of the duty system, including weeknight, weekend, and university holidays.
  6. Actively support other members of the residence hall staff; work collaboratively as a team.
  7. Support and adhere to University and Housing & Dining Services policies, regulations, and procedures.
  8. Assist in the selection and training of new staff.
  9. Complete paperwork in a thorough and timely manner.
  10. Keep supervisor informed of floor, resident, and facility issues, and assist in resolution as needed.


Conditions of Employment

  1. Must be available and willing to work from May 22, 2017 to July 21, 2017.
  2. RAs must be enrolled for the Fall 2017 semester at CSU during their period of employment.
  3. RAs must live on-campus during their period of employment in the room provided.
  4. RAs must be in good academic standing with the University; a GPA of 2.5 is preferred.
  5. During period of employment, RAs may be enrolled in online summer classes in consultation with the Ram Orientation ARD.
  6. RA-SPs must have completed at least 15 credit hours and have lived in a residence hall for one semester at the time of hire.
  7. Remuneration is a single room with board, including 21 meals/week and $50 RamCash, during the employment period. Earn $9.30 per hour while working the community desk, completing check-in and check-out duties, luggage check, and late night programming.
